Near Bucharest – and in much of the southern half of Romania – the last remnants of the forests that should provide oxygen to the cities set in the middle of the fields are being systematically decimated. In the plain forests, logging companies mainly hunt for centuries-old oaks, extremely valuable trees that they cut down with acts of “forest hygiene”, i.e. an alleged operation to clean the forest of dead trees. In an investigation spanning the last six months, we have taken the forests of several counties step by step, gathered evidence and confronted everyone involved in this phenomenon.
