In Leutkirch in Allgäu, farmer Reinhold Gaile has been operating a biogas plant for almost 20 years now. He feeds all of the heat generated during the electricity generation into the local district heating network. In 2025, the EEG funding for the plant will end. In order to continue operating it economically, Reinhold Gaile needs follow-up funding - which is difficult to achieve. In the worst case, the plant will have to be shut down. This would not only mean that the electricity provided on demand would be lost, but also the climate-friendly biogas heat. This is not an isolated case. For many biogas plants, the EEG funding will expire in the next few years. In order to prevent these plants from going out of business, the tender volume must be increased to 1800 MW/year and the flexible surcharge raised to €120 / kW per year.
