Greece is the third largest producer of olive oil with the largest percentage of domestic production being classified in the highest category, that of extra virgin olive oil. However, in recent years, the olive growing sector has been concerned about the future of its production in our country. In early 2020, Niovi Anazikou visited Messinia, which according to ELSTAT data is the prefecture with the largest number of olive trees, and met producers to learn about the difficulties they face in olive growing. She discussed with Giorgos Kokkinos, the president of the model olive producers' group "Nileas", how collective schemes can help farmers and how climate change affects the conditions of olive oil production. He also met producer Christina Strimpakou to learn what it is like to promote your own olive oil all over the world and win distinctions and awards for it. He also visited Yiannis Kontosthenos, an experienced olive oil exporter, so that he could inform us about the reasons why the largest quantity of the product is sent abroad in bulk, without standardization, and how this product is marketed by foreign countries. Finally, he met Professor Giorgos Zakynthinos and president of the Department of Food Science and Technology who launched the first postgraduate study program in our country for olives and oil entitled: “Technology and quality of table olives and olive oil”, at the University of the Peloponnese based in Kalamata.
