The Super Bowl is starting - the season finale of the National Football League! For all newcomers, here is a brief overview of the rules: Two teams face each other and try to either carry the ball into the opponent's end zone or score a field goal. The attackers – the offense – have four attempts – called downs – to bring the ball at least 10 yards closer to the opponent’s end zone. The ball can be carried or thrown. The defenders – the defense – try to prevent this. If the player carrying the ball is pulled to the ground by an opponent or leaves the field, the next attempt starts from this line – the so-called line of scrimmage. If the offense manages to cover the 10 yards in its four downs, it gets another four. This continues until it either fails or scores a touchdown or a field goal. You get 6 points for a touchdown, 3 for a field goal. After each touchdown, there is a chance for extra points: one point for a shot through the posts – an extra point – and two points for another touchdown – the two-point conversion. If the offense has not managed to get 10 yards further after three attempts, it usually uses the fourth attempt for a punt. They try to shoot the ball as far into the opponent's half as possible - because that's where the other team starts their drive. Those are the basic rules. But of course the Super Bowl isn't just about sport: Did you know that Americans spend over $15 billion on fan merchandise, drinks and snacks during the Super Bowl? For example, on the 5 million kilograms of chips and 1.3 billion chicken wings that are eaten. Almost 190 million people will watch in the USA alone - no wonder a 30-second commercial can cost up to $5 million. But whether you're watching for the halftime show, the sport, or because you're insomniac - what counts is a great evening with friends and a cold drink in hand.
