During the Second World War, 50,000 Norwegians fled to Sweden. At risk of being killed, the refugees were helped by local border guards and helpers. Along the entire border, Norwegian border police and the Germans tirelessly chased the refugees. In this film, I follow in the footsteps of the refugees, and look at many authentic photos from a German policeman who was stationed in the border village of Ørje. Over 120 refugee routes have been registered that were in use over several years, from the Iddefjord in Østfold to the Varanger Peninsula in Finnmark. It has been recorded that 29 border guards fell, were executed or died in captivity, while 55 helpers suffered the same fate. The borderless were exposed to unusual physical and psychological stress, often for long periods of time. More than 1,000 people were probably involved, many of them young people. The border guards were part of the resistance struggle in Norway. This film was made to honor those who helped Norwegian refugees to Sweden during the Second World War. A certain proportion of the civilian refugees were allowed to live with relatives and friends in Sweden, but it was the Swedish authorities who took care of the vast majority of the refugees. A number of smaller settlements were set up in schools, community centers and hostels to take care of the necessary tasks associated with the refugees' stay. In this first phase in 1940, it cannot be said that any actual reception apparatus had been established, and much of the relief work had to be improvised. From the summer of 1944, both organized and unorganized refugee traffic reached its greatest extent. In August of this year, over 2,000 refugees crossed the border, and the number remained at over 2,000 every month for the rest of the war. A total of 16,000 Norwegians fled to Sweden in 1944, and this was twice as many as in 1942 FESTNINGSVERK MILITARY HISTORY ON SOCIAL MEDIA: WEB: http://festningsverk.no FACEBOOK PAGE: / festningsverk.no FACEBOOK GROUP: / bilderfranorge FACEBOOK: / 460485847982579 INSTAGRAM: / norwegian_ww2_photos INSTAGRAM: / fortifications Sources: Cultural monuments along the Haldenkanalen, Grethe Brustad Nilsen.
