Socotra is a Yemeni archipelago of six islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa near the Gulf of Aden, located about 240 kilometres (150 mi) east of the coast of Somalia and 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula. The archipelago includes a main island, Socotra, which is exceptional in terms of its high diversity of plants and the proportion of endemic species, as 73% of the plant species (out of 528 species), 09% of the reptile species and 59% of the land snail species found in the archipelago are not found in any other parts of the world. As for birds, the site is home to globally important species (291 species, 44 of which breed on the islands, while 58 migrate regularly), including some endangered species. Socotra's marine life is highly diverse, with 352 species of reef-building coral, 730 species of coastal fish, and 300 species of crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. The island was designated a World Heritage Site in 2008, and was named the most beautiful island in the world by The New York Times in 2010 due to its unique biodiversity, environmental importance, and global impact. In October 2013, the Socotra Archipelago Governorate became an independent governorate from Hadhramaut Governorate.
