The Monk and the Demon is a phantasmagoric comedy about a monk from the reign of Nicholas I and his attempt to cope with the demon tempting him. Starring Timofey Tribuntsev. Monk Ivan asks to be accepted into a monastery because his previous one burned down. However, Ivan turns out to be not simple — he is overcome by demons. Or rather, only one demon — Legion. He tempts Ivan and uses him to commit his atrocities. But the monk's spirit turns out to be stronger. The Monk and the Demon follows the traditions of mystical tragicomedy in the spirit of Nikolai Leskov and Nikolai Gogol. The film was awarded the main Russian film awards Nika and Golden Eagle. The Monk and the Demon is a film on a religious theme, with a deep philosophical subtext, but filmed in a completely accessible manner.
