In 1969, after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, a special unit was established, known as Unit 0110/Anti-KGB, which dealt with counterintelligence activities in socialist countries. Its activity was aimed at the actions of the Soviet secret services on Romanian territory, through its agents the Kremlin supervising the political regime in Bucharest. In the summer of 1970, Nicolae Mihai, rear admiral in retirement, and major general in retirement Kostyal Ştefan drafted a letter in which they expressed their disagreement with the internal and foreign policy of the party and state leadership in our country and requested the intervention of the Soviet army in Romania to change it. The letter was also signed by 17 other reserve officers and civilians who had studied in the USSR – some of them known as NKVD agents, the precursor to the KGB. Colonel (retd) SRI Ioan Burdulea is one of the officers who supervised and investigated them, but who had the courage to write the first report from inside UM 0110 after 1989. "In the service of the truth – from the memories of an intelligence officer", a book that can be ordered on www.edituradecarte.ro clarifies a good part of the speculation that has been circulating on the topic of Soviet agents in Romania. Among other sensational revelations, Col. (retd) SRI Ioan Burdulea says that he has no reservations in stating that Ion Iliescu was a Soviet agent.
