Steffen Loos is a treasure hunter. The geologist determines where the largest hole in Rhineland-Palatinate gets even deeper. He is the "master of the pit", the quarry in Hahnstätten, and he looks for mineral resources. The family business that Steffen Loos works for has been mining lime in the Taunus for over 150 years. In the huge pit, the 60-ton wheel loaders look like toy cars. The floor of the quarry is only 24 meters above sea level. The company is the second largest lime producer in Germany, but hardly any competitor is as technologically advanced as the Hahnstätter. They are leaders in processing: paper, pharmaceuticals, paints - lime from the Taunus is a component of many products. Steffen Loos likes to show the little ones crystals from the quarry during children's tours. The old stones inspire the young visitors, but the tours are also a marketing measure: they promote an understanding of the noise and dust that such lime mining brings with it. Some residents of the surrounding villages have an ambivalent relationship with the limestone mining on their doorstep. Welcome to the YouTube channel of the Landesschau Rheinland-Pfalz.
