This speech explores the evolution of search engines, highlighting their transition from simple information search tools to real intelligent assistants. The main technological advances, such as the introduction of artificial intelligence, machine learning and voice interfaces, which have transformed the interaction with search engines into a more natural, personalized and predictive experience, will be analyzed. The speech will offer a glimpse into future prospects, underlining the central role of these digital assistants in everyday life. Paolo Ferragina born in Catanzaro on 27/06/1969 is a professor of computer science at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and at the University of Pisa. He holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Pisa and a postdoc at the Max-Planck Institut fur Informatik. He served the University of Pisa as Pro-Rector for ICT, and for Applied Research and Innovation, and as Director of the PhD program in Computer Science. His research focuses on the design of algorithms for compressing, extracting, and searching information from large amounts of data. His research has resulted in numerous patents and has appeared in nearly 200 papers published in leading conferences and journals. He is a co-recipient of the 2022 ACM Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award and several other international awards.
