Prime numbers are a mystery that mathematicians have been trying to unravel for over 2,300 years, when the Greek Euclid proved that there are an infinite number of them. The problem is that if someone managed to solve this enigma, our interconnected world would be seriously threatened. It could even cause the collapse of the global financial system. Prime numbers are those that can only be divided by 1 or by themselves. For thousands of years, mathematicians have been trying to discover whether there is a regular pattern that can be used to determine how they are distributed. Solving this problem is perhaps one of the greatest challenges in pure mathematics today. And the repercussions of this discovery could have a great influence on other sciences, such as computer science and cryptography.
