The battle took place after bitter setbacks for the countries and cities of the Islamic world, as the Khwarazmian state fell at the hands of the Mongols, followed by the fall of Baghdad, followed by the fall of all the cities of the Levant and Palestine, which submitted to Hulagu. Egypt at that time was groaning from internal conflicts, which ended with Saif al-Din Qutuz ascending the throne of Egypt in 657 AH / 1259 AD as Sultan of the Mamluks of Egypt. He began preparing to confront the Tatars, so he arranged the internal affairs of Egypt and suppressed the revolutions of those who coveted power, then issued a general amnesty for the Mamluks who fled from Egypt after the killing of Faris al-Din Aqtai, including Baybars. As soon as Qutuz finished preparing the army, he marched with it from the Salihiya region east of Egypt until he reached the Ain Jalut plain, which is located approximately between the city of Beisan in the north and the city of Nablus in the south in Palestine. There, the Islamic and Mongol armies confronted each other, and the Muslims were victorious. Thousands of Mongols were able to escape from the battle and headed near Beisan. Then the decisive battle took place and the Muslims won a great victory, and the entire Mongol army was annihilated.
