The Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure that the most advanced civilizations in the Universe could build around their mother star to harvest all the power of a Sun. Theorized in the 1960s by physicist Freeman Dyson, they would be the gateway to a type 2 civilization on the Kardashev scale, providing these extraterrestrial beings with virtually infinite energy. Perhaps our future was in the stars. And patrolling the sky in search of these stellar constructions was our best hope of finding intelligent life beyond Earth. However, many considered these Dyson spheres to be a simple hypothesis, something closer to fiction than science. But everything changed in 2015, when Tabetha S. Boyajian, inspecting data from the Kepler telescope, discovered strange light fluctuations in a star 1,500 light-years away known as KIC 8462852. The star had dimmed by 22% in a single day, so something huge, much larger than a planet, had dimmed its light. Something huge was orbiting the star now named Tabby's Star in honor of the astronomer. And it wasn't a world. No natural explanation worked. So long after, the Dyson sphere hypothesis was reborn.
