Today we are in the municipality of Esanatoglia in the province of Macerata, on the slopes of Mount Cafaggio. This is where the Esino river originates. In this photo exploration we will not reach the source but we will stop in a much more particular and characteristic place, the gorge of the Esino river. Once you arrive in the town, take Via Panicale and take Strada Sorgenti Fiume Esino. The road is narrow and you have to take turns with the cars coming from in front. At a certain point it is no longer asphalted but you continue until a left curve with a clearing and immediately after a small restaurant. It is time to park the car. From here you go on foot. The route, comfortable and enchanting, (4.5 km long to the source but about 3 to the gorge) is mostly flat on a dirt road that runs alongside the river, except for the last few hundred meters that enters the woods and is slightly uphill. There is no shortage of signs and the walk immersed in the green environment is very pleasant. Once you reach the gorge, the visual impact is truly suggestive. On the left, a rock face leans forward towards you like an umbrella, but the real spectacle is on the right! The entrance to the gorge between the two vertical walls will remain etched in your mind forever. If you get the period and the moment right, you can find it with little water and this is the best condition because it will be more suggestive but it will not prevent you from walking along it. If you want, the path to the springs continues for about a km to the left of the overhanging wall, but be careful: it is a path partially equipped with cables, quite steep and exposed, so don't improvise as a climber, think carefully about your choice! Arriving at the entrance to the gorge and entering it is a wonderful experience. The vertical walls in which it is dug continuously narrow and widen, making it very irregular and varied. The riverbed is full of rocks and boulders with smooth shapes (be careful if they are damp or wet because they are very slippery) at first not very steep then as you proceed it climbs more and more until you find yourself in front of real rapids caused by large boulders that obstruct the path. Those few rays of sun that penetrate vertically give bright colors and very clear lights and shadows. It is a wild landscape but at the same time truly fascinating!
