I had the pleasure of visiting Fazenda Carnaúba, located in the backlands of Cariri, in the municipality of Taperoá in the backlands of Paraíba. A farm that is a national reference in livestock farming and we will show you why. A relic of Paraíba, a historic farm that belonged to Dr. Manelito Dantas and that has a history with Ariano Suassuna, the great poet of Carnaúba. It has been passed down from generation to generation, being preserved over time, since 1782, when it belonged to some priests of the time. It is considered by those who visit it to be much more than just a livestock farm to produce and live off of, as it is well known throughout the world. For those who experience Carnaúba, in addition to being a reference for a productive and honorable way of life, it is also a sacred place that encourages people to come together, emanating a positive, unique energy that rebuilds and soothes. As a representative of his generation, going against the grain, institutionally alone, Manelito Dantas made it an example of a production system in the region and also a kind of intangible cultural heritage of Brazil, being recognized and valued overseas. This fact was a consequence of the commitment he had, with total empathy, to continue the visionary, wise, conscious and realistic dream of his father, Seo Dantas. After the death of Seo Dantas, Manelito abandoned his promising urban/professional life, which had begun with meritocracy at the age of 22 (he held positions as a full professor at a university, as a sanitary engineer and as a manager in the public service), to dedicate himself entirely to the farms, seeking to continue his mission, with aspirations and a focused vision, based on long conversations he had with his father. Today, the work that was continued and improved hopes to be maintained in this condition by the generations that follow, without losing the main focus, which is the production system appropriate for the region, considering all its technical, social and cultural aspects. Seo Dantas died suddenly while working in 1969, when Manelito, already involved in the farm in some way, gave up his urban professional life to continue his father's realistic and visionary dream. Of the seven brothers (all of whom also lived in the city), he was the one who had the most affinity with the land. At that moment, he understood that he would have to move on, and to do so he would need to dedicate himself fully. He did so by choice, with great satisfaction. Following the path already taken, he had the practical, technical and official concern of not undoing the pioneering and promising work that had already been done up until then. Being the 8th generation of the family on the Carnaúba Farm, he took care of it with full commitment and exclusive dedication for more than half a century. He dedicated all his efforts to preserving his father's legacy, and sought to make viable an adequate production system that could provide sustainability to the farms and serve as an example for the region.
