An incredible accident that happened 60 years ago has led us on the trail of the old Renon rack railway. In reality, it is a video already published on the channel, of which we are re-proposing some parts for those who have never seen it with an unpublished description of the accident of December 2, 1964. At 8.40 in the morning of that tragic day, a convoy was descending towards Bolzano when, having reached km 2.618, in the section where the gradient reaches its maximum peak of 25.5%, the carriages began to jolt and immediately afterwards the rear wheels of the locomotive derailed, causing the vehicle to veer off the track, which in turn derailed the coupled carriage which overturned, falling into the embankment, causing 3 deaths and 58 injuries. The reconstruction of the accident was very complex, and in the end the cause was attributed to the malicious activation of the handbrake on the carriage by a passenger. This unfortunate act would have caused the blocking of the toothed wheel that was inserted into the rack, causing the teeth to slip and a consequent series of jolts and jolts that led to the derailment of both vehicles.
