Donald Trump snatched the presidency from Hillary Clinton in 2016 thanks to the distorting effect of the Electoral College in the United States. The Democratic candidate had at least won the popular vote by 3 million votes, a consolation that Kamala Harris could not take away from Election Day either. Unlike Clinton, who lost by a narrow margin in key states, Harris suffered a much broader defeat, especially in the industrial belt (Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin), where support for Trump was consolidated. In addition, Harris received less support from independent and rural voters, segments where Clinton managed to remain competitive. The drop in minority participation, especially among African Americans and Latinos, also contributed to this new defeat of a Democratic presidential candidate.
