St. Mark's Basilica is the most famous church in Venice, Italy, and one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture. Located in St. Mark's Square, next to the Doge's Palace, the basilica has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice since 1807. Outside the Basilica, above the central portico, are the 4 Horses of Constantine, which are almost 2,500 years old! Venice stole the statues from Constantinople in the 13th century, and then Napoleon stole them from Venice at the turn of the 19th century. Another attraction in the square is the curious Torre dell'Orologio, or simply the Clock Tower of Venice, a technological marvel from the 15th century that showed the time, the phases of the moon, and the dominant sign of the zodiac. It was built high above the square to protect it from the Acqua Alta and to be seen from the canal.
