Based on the chapters “Rural Heritage” and “The Cordial Man” from the book “Raízes do Brasil” by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, I present the author’s view on the characteristics of Brazilian patriarchy and cordiality, as well as the social implications they produce. In “Raízes do Brasil”, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda applies a Weberian view of Brazilian society, using pure types (ideal types) to understand its characteristics. The author also uses the country’s history to show how our sociability was constructed and, consequently, the way we deal with daily life and politics. This is one of the essential works for understanding the Brazilian people and in this video I present part of it.
