Two inscriptions in blood, reading "OMAR KILLED ME" [sic], found at the crime scene, led the justice system to charge Omar Raddad, the victim's gardener, despite his protestations of innocence and numerous elements sowing doubt. Defended by Me Jacques Vergès, he was sentenced in 1994 to 18 years of criminal imprisonment, before benefiting, in 1996, from a partial pardon granted by President Jacques Chirac. Since his release, Omar Raddad has continued to fight to have his conviction overturned. This case has remained famous because of the mystery surrounding the crime scenario. The body of Ghislaine Marchal had in fact been found in the cellar of her villa, the access door of which was blocked from the inside. Raddad's conviction sparked a lively controversy, in France as well as in Morocco, his country of origin, with the defense criticizing the way in which the investigation was conducted and contesting in particular the conclusions of the autopsy and the handwriting analyses. After the conviction, Me Vergès also declared that the North African origin of the accused could have worked against him, provoking the indignation of the lawyer for the civil party, Henri Leclerc, who is also vice-president of the Human Rights League. The inscription "OMAR KILLED ME" has remained emblematic of this criminal case, which is one of the most significant of the 1990s. Every Saturday at 2pm on France 2, this magazine focuses on "cold cases". Closed cases, deemed insoluble, which have sometimes resisted the tenacity of investigators for nearly 50 years before a clue, an unexpected testimony or an innovative scientific expertise allows the culprits to be caught. Alongside Marie Drucker, criminologist Alain Bauer provides technical, psychological, sociological or historical insight into each case to understand the procedures implemented during the investigation, but also its issues and repercussions.
