Who is Yazid bin Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan bin Harb bin Umayya Al-Umawi Al-Dimashqi. Al-Dhahabi said: He was the commander of that army in the conquest of Constantinople, and among them was the likes of Abu Ayoub Al-Ansari, whose father appointed him as crown prince after him, so he took over the kingdom upon the death of his father in Rajab of the year sixty, and he was thirty-three years old, so his reign was less than four years. Yazid is not one of those we love nor do we like, and he has peers among the caliphs of the two states, as well as among the kings of the regions, in fact there are those who are worse than him. The matter was made serious because he succeeded the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, forty-nine years after his death, and the era was recent, and the companions were present, such as Ibn Omar, who was more deserving of the matter than him, his father, and his grandfather. He began his state with the killing of the martyr Hussein and concluded it with the Battle of al-Harrah, so the people hated him and his life was not blessed, and more than one rebelled against him after Hussein, such as the people of Medina who rose up for God... and Ibn al-Zubayr... Siyar A'lam al-Nubala, vol. 4, p. 38. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah explained the position on Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah, saying: The people were divided into three groups regarding Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, two extremes and a middle. One of the parties said: He was a disbeliever and a hypocrite, and that he sought to kill the grandson of the Messenger of Allah to spite the Messenger of Allah and take revenge on him, and to avenge his grandfather Utbah and his grandfather’s brother Shaybah, and his maternal uncle Al-Walid bin Utbah and others who were killed by the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at the hands of Ali bin Abi Talib and others on the day of Badr and others. And things of this type. This statement is easy for the Rafidah who declare Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman to be disbelievers, so declaring Yazid to be a disbeliever is much easier. The second party: They think that he was a righteous man and a just imam, and that he was one of the companions who were born during the time of the Prophet and carried him in his arms and blessed him. Perhaps some of them preferred him over Abu Bakr and Umar, and perhaps some of them made him a prophet... Both statements are clearly false to those who have the slightest intellect and knowledge of matters and the biographies of the predecessors, and for this reason it is not attributed to any of the scholars known for the Sunnah, nor to any of the rational people who have an opinion and experience. The third statement: He was a king of the kings of the Muslims who had good and bad deeds, and he was not born until the caliphate of Uthman, and he was not an infidel, but what happened because of him happened, the killing of Al-Hussein and what he did to the people of Al-Harrah, and he was not a companion nor one of the righteous friends of Allah, and this is the statement of the majority of the people of intellect, knowledge, Sunnah and the community. Then they split into three groups, a group that cursed him, a group that loved him, and a group that neither cursed him nor loved him. This is what is stated by Imam Ahmad and is agreed upon by the moderate ones among his companions and others from all the Muslims. Salih bin Ahmad said: I said to my father: Some people say that they love Yazid, so he said: O my son, does anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day love Yazid!! I said: O my father, why don’t you curse him? He said: O my son, when did you see your father curse anyone? Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi said when he was asked about Yazid, as far as I have heard, he is neither cursed nor loved. He said: It has also reached me that our grandfather Abu Abdullah ibn Taymiyyah was asked about Yazid, and he said: We do not decrease or increase in him, and this is the most just and best of the sayings about him and his likes...
