Episode 15 of the documentary series The Clandestine Heritage, broadcast on January 13 on #TVR1, when Monica Ghiurco proposed an edition in which we analyze Romania's foreign policy during the communist regime, with historians and career diplomats, Romanian and foreign. More episodes can be found online http://bit.ly/MostenireaClandestina During the Cold War, Romania was a captive country between East and West, but had the ambition to get involved in big politics. Romanian diplomacy is still spoken of in appreciative terms today. Although a member of the Soviet bloc, communist Romania assumed an active foreign policy, intensified its cooperation with Western powers, had diplomatic relations with Israel and Arab countries, and even got involved in negotiating conflicts in the Middle East and Asia. Moreover, in 1963, during the missile crisis, the Romanians' message to the Americans was very clear: "We are different from the others in the communist bloc!" With all the risk, Romania's Western option had become explicit, even if it did not leave the Russian zone of influence - it was practically impossible, without major sacrifices, and the bloody events of December 1989 confirm it.
