The construction boom in the People's Republic of China has reached unprecedented heights. Just two decades ago, the country was trying to catch up with developed countries. Now China has pulled ahead in many ways. Statistics show that in the last two years, China has produced more concrete than the United States did in the entire twentieth century. China is one of the few countries in the modern world that is building entire cities. New settlements are being built all over the People's Republic of China. There are now 220 cities with a population of over a million and 23 settlements with a population of over 5 million. Last year, China built more than half of the world's skyscrapers, and it has no plans to slow down its rapid urbanization. But how do its workers build tall towers so quickly? It is the country's secret weapon: a powerful skyscraper-building machine dubbed the "wall-climbing monster." The enormous construction machine weighs 2,000 tons and was developed by Chinese engineers. It provides workers with a platform to build a building upwards and can remain stable even at a height of more than 500 metres above the ground, according to a programme on Chinese state television. It is also said that the self-supporting platform can support weights of up to 2,000 tonnes and can even withstand hurricane force. China claims the machine, developed by the country's own engineers, can speed up the construction process by 20 per cent. Using two tracks on each side and 12 hydraulic jacks, the machine can rise evenly once workers have finished building a few floors above - to create a new and higher working platform. Each of the support points on the tracks can weigh up to 400 tonnes. The machine is currently being used to build the Wuhan Greenland Centre in the capital of Hubei province. The 119-storey skyscraper, costing £3.3 billion, is due to be completed by the end of 2020. At 636 metres high, the tower is set to become the tallest building in China - beating the Shanghai Tower by four metres. Nowhere in the world is there more ambition in skyscraper building than China. The nation already has five of the world's 10 tallest buildings. And last year, it built 76 of the world's 144 new skyscrapers - those taller than 200 metres.
