In this report, the BBC visits Melgaço, in the Marajó archipelago (PA), and São Caetano do Sul, in Greater São Paulo, to understand how two cities in the same country can present such different realities. Melgaço has the worst Human Development Index (HDI) in the country, while São Caetano has the best - differences that are radically expressed in the conditions of schools, hospitals and the financial situation of the residents of each city. But we also discovered nuances that the HDI does not show: in São Caetano, high costs expel the poorest to neighboring cities, and, in Melgaço, riverside dwellers help to keep the Amazon Rainforest standing.
