In the 1st millennium BC, Europe was firmly in the hands of the Celts. Their tribal territories stretched from Britain through Central Europe to Anatolia. When large tribal groups crossed the Alps in the 4th century BC, they challenged Rome. In 387 BC, the Romans suffered a severe defeat in the Battle of the Allia. The Roman army was overrun by the Celtic warriors and the city of Rome was taken by the barbarians - as the Romans called the Celts. The Celts were far superior to the Romans in terms of weapons and warfare. The Celts became a trauma for the rising power from the Tiber and ultimately the trigger for its rise to world power.
