A3 NEWS Venice 12/07/2023 - VENICE - Not everyone knows it, but a few steps away from the frenzy of the train station and the Grand Canal, a hectare cultivated with different varieties of plants survives: it is the "Mystical Garden" of the Discalced Carmelites of Venice. Father Ermanno Barucco is the prior of the community of the Discalced Carmelites of Venice. He is among the custodians of what is called the "Mystical Garden": a pleasant and unexpected oasis of serenity extending for about a hectare a few meters from the frenzy of the train station and the chaotic traffic of the Grand Canal. When the railway arrived in Venice in the mid-1800s, much of this area was gradually razed to the ground to accommodate the first station: a monastery, the church of Santa Lucia, the church of Corpus Domini, the school of the Nobili, the Bragadin, Priuli della Nave, Lion and Barzizza palaces. But the troubles were not over. During the Great War of '15/18 Venice was the most bombed urban center in Italy: it suffered 42 air raids during which over a thousand bombs were dropped, causing dozens of deaths. One of the bombs knocked down the roof of the nearby church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, destroying a large part of the ceiling frescoed by Tiepolo. - Interviewed FATHER ERMANNO BARUCCO (PRIOR OF THE DISCALCED CARMELITES OF VENICE) (Report by Filippo Fois) - Follow Antenna Tre also on digital terrestrial!
