After marriage, Rumi was chosen as his father's successor when he was young. But Maulana Balkhi was young and at that time he was lucky in Maulana's house and a man named Burhanuddin, who was one of Maulana's father's companions and disciples, came to Konya to visit Maulana's father. But he realized that his father had lost his sight, so Rumi asked him to teach him to succeed his father and the disciples had this request from Rumi. Burhanuddin accepted and Rumi's teachings began. He was taught by Burhanuddin and in addition to scientific and religious teachings, he also learned self-purification and ascetic teachings. Burhanuddin introduced Rumi to the teachings of Sufism and Rumi became fascinated by the methods of Sufism. He went to Syria and Damascus with his teacher and spent some time there. He also studied with the Syrian master and then he was able to achieve certain degrees. After the death of his teacher, Rumi left Syria and returned to Konya. Rumi was in Konya when he was informed that a man had come, very angry, a dervish, and had gathered everyone around him. His name was Shams Tabrizi. Rumi had met Shams Tabrizi before.
