Contact: [email protected] For thousands of years, people thought either that the Universe had always existed or that it was created 6,000 years ago. years earlier, or something like that. Only the creation of the general theory of relativity was a breakthrough – says Dr. Stanisław Bajtlik from the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the Scientific Radio. - It was discovered in the 1920s that this theory implies that the Universe had a beginning, that it must be expanding. This was quickly confirmed by observation: it was noticed that galaxies are moving away from each other and at a speed proportional to the distance between them. If they are moving away, it means that in the past they must have been closer to each other – he adds. Hence the more far-reaching conclusions. – If we go back in time, we will understand that there must have been an era in which there could be no stars, because the distances between them would be so small that the atoms they are made of would not know which star they belong to. There must have been an era even earlier in which there could be no atoms, because the distances between them would be smaller than their sizes – says the astrophysicist. Nevertheless, the concept of the great beginning, the Big Bang (the name "Big Bang" was used ironically, but it caught on) caused a lot of reluctance. It was (and is) associated with a lot of problems. Why is the Universe, wherever you look, uniform on a large scale? Why is its geometry flat (i.e. the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees)? This is not at all obvious. Today, it is usually explained by the phenomenon of cosmic inflation - but this has not yet been proven. We do not know much about the beginnings themselves and it is possible that we will never know. However, we should not underestimate the enormous progress of science in recent decades. How much have we learned since Dr. Bajtlik has been involved in science? - It is incomparable! When I graduated, there was no theory of cosmic inflation. There was no hypothesis that would explain how the original density fluctuations from which galaxies were created came about... - the astrophysicist enumerates. In the podcast, we talk about the struggles of scientists to discover the beginnings of the Universe, we wonder whether there was a zero moment at all, and we touch on the boundaries of knowledge - is the Planck era an insurmountable boundary for our understanding?
