One of them asked me what I thought was the best motorcycle in the world and another one took pity and said, “at least let me choose one or two, but by category.” So said and done: I chose the best and an alternative from 8 different categories or types… Mopeds. Vespino! In 1968, a moped was born in Spain that gave its name to all mopeds. Because in Spain you don’t say “I bought a Honda moped” you say “I bought a Honda Vespino”… The second option is the Derbi Variant, from 1977, or “the Derbi vespino” that came later, but with an aura of being “more sporty”: Off Road. Honda CR250! Of course the first one with an aluminum chassis, the one from 1997… Before this year it was said that Hondas had the best engine, but that the frame was failing and Honda wanted to solve this issue radically… In this case I was very clear about it. Which is funny, because I tried that bike at the time and I thought it was the future, but I didn't like it at all. I was used to my Suzuki RM and found the Honda too rigid and demanding. The second option is the Kawasaki, any one with Unitrack suspension from 1979, which inaugurated the progressive rear suspension systems that are now commonplace on off-road and on-road bikes. Touring. Honda Goldwing GL1500. Because the original Goldwing born in 1974 was a revolution, with its boxer engine and its great level of comfort. But I think that this model took a huge leap forward with the arrival in 1988 of the GL1500 with a 6-cylinder boxer engine. I know of few bikes that are as refined… The second option is the BMW R1200RT, which appeared in 2003 and was a successful successor to the previous 1150 with many improvements. In this case, I didn’t like the 1150 at all and the 1200 surprised me… so much so that I later had 2 RT 1250s. Sport Turismo. Without a doubt, the Kawasaki ZZR 1100, which was presented in 1990. It’s a bike that I fell in love with to the point that… I bought one! And I rode it intensively at speeds that I’m not going to tell you about… I was young and those were different times… The second option is the Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa, which appeared in 1999 and had almost 180 hp… it was going to replace my ZZR, but I got into track riding and bought my first GSX 1000RR. Supersport or RR. Bimota Tesi 1D, the first one. My good friend César Agüi was the one who gave me the admiration for Bimota in general and the Tesi in general. I have chosen the first one, which appeared in 1987, at the height of Bimota’s financial difficulties and was re-appeared and put on sale in 1991. My second choice is the Ducati 916 from 1994, chosen many times as one of the most beautiful motorcycles in history. Its engine, as you can imagine, was 916 cm3 with two V-cylinders at 90 rpm and offered 114 HP. Trail. BMW R1200GS from 2004. Until 2003 I had never liked Trail bikes and the BMW GS the least… They said they were bikes good for everything and to me they seemed like bikes good for nothing. When they insisted that I try the R1200GS, I thought it was a waste of time… but those 15 extra HP and, above all, those 25 kg less than its predecessor, the 1150, worked wonders on that bike. To me, it seems to be the first really interesting BMW GS… and, probably, the reason why I now have a GS in the garage. The second option, in this case, was almost the first, the Honda Africa Twin XRV650 from 1988, a “civilized” replica of the NXR750 winner of the Dakar. And one of the best Trail bikes in history. Custom. I chose the Harley Davidson Fat Boy from 1990. It was hard for me to choose a Custom for three reasons. The first, they are bikes that I don’t like. I think they are very nice, I understand their charm, but I don’t like them for myself. The second reason is that I think that the best Custom should be a Harley Davidson… and there is so much to choose from! So I have chosen the “Fat Boy” that appears in the movie “Terminator”. The third reason is that I like the second option, the Honda Walkyrie that appeared in 1996, better. When I went down to test it in the garage I was thinking “what a mess all weekend with this thing” but I confess that in the end that bike, a Goldwing naked, seduced me. Naked. I love the Yamaha XJR1200 from 1995 because it is the same as the bikes I used to ride as a teenager, an impressive, beautiful and reasonably powerful bike with its 98 HP of quality. You already know that my personal tastes are very radical and I am not a fan of naked bikes, but there are very, very nice ones and there is the one that is the most… or at least, one of the most. My second option is another beautiful bike, the Suzuki Katana GSX 1100S from 1981, which even has a nice name. And it was a bike that, with its 1,074 cm3 engine and 90 HP, was a very fast bike for its time. I don't expect you to agree with my choices, because they are very personal things...
