Idyllic alpine pastures, imposing mountains and... melting glaciers! In one of the most popular holiday destinations in Switzerland, the climate puts people, animals and nature to the test. The Bernese Oberland in Switzerland is a region of superlatives: the highest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier, is located here, and the largest underground waterfalls in Europe, the Trümmelbach Falls, flow here. And the famous trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau attract tourists from all over the world to the Swiss mountains every year. Rivers and lakes in the valleys make the country a popular travel destination and are also a vital source of life for people, animals and plants. Alpine farming, ecology and tourism are equally dependent on the delicate balance of nature. Summer is crucial for life in the mountains, which is directly linked to the cycles of nature. Jonas and Fabienne, young dairymen, are eagerly awaiting summer on the Swiss Alp. Until autumn, they are responsible for 50 cows - and the farmers' gold: the coveted mountain cheese. Traditional grazing creates the distinctive landscape here in the mountains. But since the tree line has been moving ever higher in the Swiss Alps, an unwelcome guest has been causing problems for the animals: the tick. On the Schweibenalp, gardener Johanna Becker is an expert in permaculture and knows which lettuce is particularly suitable for the cool high altitudes. The sustainable cultivation of vegetables and herbs attracts volunteers and guests to the heights. In the Bernese High Alps, on the Jungfraujoch, the largest glacier in the Alps is in danger of disappearing dangerously quickly. Scientists, engineers and employees are concerned with the protection and preservation of the Alpine region and are trying to overcome the major challenges they face.
