Lecture by Prof. Przemysław Urbańczyk as part of the 1a Science Café in the Wawerski Cultural Center [April 14, 2016] https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/pocz... Christianity appeared on Polish lands even before Mieszko's baptism, and this event may not have had the character that is commonly believed - argued Prof. Przemysław Urbańczyk, archaeologist, in the 1a Science Café. The guest of the meeting recalled that archaeological research confirmed the existence of a Christian temple built in the 10th century on the site of the current Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Poznań. The building must have been built before 966, considered the date of Mieszko's baptism, and was closely connected with the seat of the local ruler. As Urbańczyk emphasized, there is no known case of rulers building churches while planning a baptism. Therefore, the ruler in Poznań at that time must have been a Christian. The archaeologist put forward the thesis that the Piasts were descendants of Christian rulers of Great Moravia, who found refuge in Greater Poland after the fall of their state in 906. This is evidenced by the new towns that have been built there since then. This is also supported by the fact that Mieszko gave one of his sons the name Świętopełk, which was the dynastic name of the rulers of Great Moravia. Mieszko was not baptized? According to Urbańczyk, the event considered to be Mieszko's baptism could have de facto been a renewal of ties with the Church. The descendants of the rulers of Greater Poland who ruled could have cultivated the Christian faith brought from their homeland, but in isolation from the existing church hierarchy. The archaeologist also noted that the Christian cult was very limited at that time. No burials related to this religion have been found on Polish lands from that time. It is therefore possible that for a long time the faith in Christ was the sole domain of the rulers.
