THE BATTLES OF PASUBIO In the aftermath of Italy's entry into the war on 24 May 1915, the Aosta Battalion was located near the Austro-Hungarian border in the area of Cividale del Friuli. After spending the summer and winter on the Isonzo and a short period on the Adamello, in May 1916, the Alpine troops of Aosta were brought together in the area of Mount Pasubio to face the spring offensive that the Austrians had organised to rout the Italian army. The Frühjarsoffensive, better known as the Strafexpedition or punitive expedition, saw the soldiers of the Aosta Valley engaged on the reliefs of Coni Zugna and Zugna Torta, on the western side of Pasubio. However, it was the battles fought on the mountain massif between Veneto and Trentino that determined the subsequent development of the entire Italian front.
