West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland were liberated after a fierce battle. Walcheren was the next horde, with the coastal batteries on the south coast as their final destination, which had their weapons aimed at the Scheldt estuary. In preparation for an invasion, the Allies had already flooded the island. On 1 November, Operation Infatuate began with the landing on the beach at Vlissingen. A few hours later, Allied commandos also went ashore in Westkapelle. One of the heaviest battles during the Second World War took place in Zeeland: the Battle of the Scheldt. The liberation of a large part of Zeeland took place between 4 September and 6 November 1944 and cost the lives of many thousands of people - civilians and soldiers. The destruction of houses, buildings and infrastructure was immense, Walcheren was almost completely flooded.
