Lecture to launch the book “The Art of Writing Well in the Portuguese Language - All grammatical rules and stylistic norms with a practical way to consult them” – with the author, Carlos Nougué! Enabling people to write well is the aim of Grammar, which is often, however, reduced to a list of rules to be memorized. This habit reveals the suspicion that grammatical norms are, deep down, meaningless; and makes them supposed to be foreign, if not contrary, to the conventions of style. Lexicographer and award-winning translator, Carlos Nougué responds to both problems by placing Grammar among the liberal arts. Seen in light of this tradition, it has both demonstrated its foundation in Logic and demonstrated its continuity with Rhetoric. Of these two achievements, the author achieves above all (but not only) the first in “Suma Gramatical da Língua Portuguesa - General and advanced grammar”, and above all (but not only) the second in “The Art of Writing Well in the Portuguese Language - All grammatical rules and stylistic norms with a practical way of consulting them”.
