In this issue we continue the theme of Moscow restoration. The main hero of our conversation with restorer Lidiya Alekseyevna Shitova is the Monastery of St. John the Baptist on Ivanovskaya Hill. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', through the efforts of the Moscow Charitable Brotherhood of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, which included future inhabitants of the monastery, restoration of the monastery began in 1992. The rector of the Church of St. Prince Vladimir, who headed the Vladimir Brotherhood, is Archpriest Sergiy Romanov. The first abbess of the revived monastery was the dean of the Pyukhtitsa Dormition Monastery, nun Afanasia (R.P. Grosheva). The permanent curator of all scientific events held in the monastery, and an indispensable advisor in matters related to the conduct of design and production restoration work on the monastery buildings, is A.L. Batalov. He studied the history of the monastery in detail, published in the fundamental edition: A.L. Batalov. Ivanovsky Monastery // Church archeology of Moscow. Temples and parishes of Ivanovskaya Gorka and Kulishki. M., 2007. On behalf of the Department of State Control over the Protection and Use of Monuments of Moscow (UGK OIP, now the Department of Cultural Heritage), the work in the 2000s was constantly supervised by highly qualified specialists G.I. Naumenko and S.M. Sorkina. Construction work at the initial stage of the return of the monastery buildings was supervised by E. Rostkovskaya (now nun Sophia). Consultations on establishing the temperature and humidity conditions in the cathedral were carried out by the leading specialist of the Central Scientific Research and Restoration Center, the highest category engineer-restorer B.T. Sizov. In the process of conducting restoration work, the wooden structures of the dome were examined by mycologist M.M. Agafonova, who was also a member of the Vladimir Brotherhood community. For many years, restoration work on the monastery was carried out under the supervision of N. M. Vinogradova (now nun Anuviya). The design group, which until recently carried out all research and design work, was headed by O. A. Danilina (it included M. A. Novikova, V. Chizhikov, and design engineer V. A. Gorbunov). Restoration work on the interiors of the cathedral and monastery buildings was carried out according to the designs of the architect and artist D. P. Zhuravlev. Work on strengthening and desalting the surface of the plaster, strengthening and cleaning the surviving fragments of painting, and preparing surfaces for recreating the lost paintings of the cathedral were consulted by technologist-restorer of monumental painting I. A. Kuleshova. Research of the remains of the lost sections of painting was carried out by technologist-restorer L. N. Uvarova (now nun Kiriakia). The restoration and recreation of the paintings were carried out in parallel by several masters: E. A. Bodunova, N. V. Egorova (she also did the gilding work), O. S. Tulpe; part of the paintings (the central part of the choir vaults) - by a group of artists led by I. V. Myasnikov. The stained glass windows in the altar windows were created by A. L. Udaltsova. Joint work with German student restorers was prepared as a result of an agreement with representatives of the Berlin Educational Center for Construction Technology. A lot of work on the bell towers was done by the master-mentor of the plasterers' group Karl Heiz Hoffmann and the stonemason student Robert Pries. The improvement and landscaping work in the eastern courtyard near the abbot's building was carried out according to a project completed by the ROMBO style landscape studio (GAP - M. Bodnya). From 2013 to 2019, the design work on the buildings of the northern and western courtyards was carried out by a group of specialists led by A.V. Petrova (architect I.E. Popov, design engineer A.A. Korshak, curator of design and production works E.V. Petrov). Over the past decades, design work and author's supervision have been carried out by specialists of the Central Scientific Restoration Workshops (FSUE TsNRPM). Currently, the leading architect-restorer of the object is K.A. Cheremisinov. Like and leave comments, this helps promote the video on YouTube.
