About :

One more day, backpacks on our shoulders, we decided to contemplate and fly in a paradisiacal place in the province of Huelva. Located on the western coast of the province, La Flecha del Rompido or Nueva Umbría is the last stretch of land that grows every year in all of Spain. La Flecha de Nueva Umbría is a sandy formation that began to form more than 200 years ago, after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, a geomorphological jewel located in the Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras. This arrow is a coastal bar formed by aeolian-marine deposits as a result of the contributions of the aforementioned river, the tidal flow and the dominant southwest winds in the area. The geomorphological dynamics of this sandy arrow is unique due to its size along the entire Andalusian coast, with a length of more than 12 kilometres, from west to east, a width of between 300 and 700 metres and an area of more than 500 hectares, whose average growth rate over the last century has been close to 40 metres per year. It is one of the only mobile land formations in Europe. The Flecha del Rompido, in turn, has created a wonderful beach, the Nueva Umbría beach. It is one of the few natural and unspoilt beaches in the province of Huelva; it is also a nudist beach. It is a place located between Lepe and Cartaya, with more than 12 kilometres of fine, white sand, typical of Atlantic beaches. The surroundings are beautiful, with marsh landscapes surrounded by beautiful areas full of pine forests; The intense blues of the sea contrast with the white of the sand and the different shades of green of its vegetation, estuaries, and dune systems, a real pleasure for the eyes. In the images of the flight, the different degrees of thickness of its vegetation can be appreciated. At the tip of the arrow, the newly created part, the incipient colonizing plants that try to stabilize the sands can be observed, contributing to the formation of the arrow. This is sabulicolous (psemmophilous) vegetation, typical of unconsolidated sandy soils, where the sea caterpillar, the rush, the sea thistle, the marsh, the silver lotus and the sea lily are found. In the oldest and most stabilized areas, broom groves develop together with carnation, everlasting and stone pine. It is worth highlighting the presence of fleshy thyme (protected species) and the Spanish poaceae. This belt of dunes formed on coastal sediments, in addition to serving as coastal protection against the ravages of the Atlantic Ocean, its vegetation shelters interesting species such as the chameleon. Of a total of 189 plant species that grow on the spit, 15 of them are exotic, that is, they are not native to the area. The beaches and dunes serve as nesting grounds for numerous species adapted to the conditions found there, such as the Kentish plover, colonies of little terns, pratincoles, etc. In the images you can see the structures of what was once an almadraba. The Real de la Almadraba de Nueva Umbría was built in 1929, closing in 1963. The complex was organized into three areas: work and storage, administrative, and residential and services. The houses of the almadraberos and their families, the captain's house, the warehouses, the tarring area and the pier are still preserved; We have already flown over these facilities in the past: • EL REAL DE LA ALMADRABA DE NUEVA UMBR... We can also see in the images of the flight the beautiful and historic town of El Rompido, formerly San Miguel, since the fort or castle of San Miguel de Arca de Buey was located there. El Rompido is a seaside town, a scattered nucleus, dependent on the City Council of Cartaya, unique for having two lighthouses. This seaside town, which lived off the almadraba, has become a tourist paradise. In the distance you can see the silhouette of the Lepero tourist complex of La Antilla. The end of La Antilla beach serves as the beginning of the already mentioned Nueva Umbría beach, a virgin beach that ends, for the moment, at the height of the tourist centre of Nuevo Portil. Nuevo Portil is a coastal tourist centre that belongs to the municipality of Cartaya, where its economic activity is tourism. In the images you can clearly see that part of the arrow is invaded by the waters of the tide. Almost a quarter of the area is under water at high tide (an active zone of tidal influence). We can also see El Portil, various piers and the endless line of pine trees during the flight. They were different days and that is why the colours that can be seen have very different shades.
