Mistake 1: You don't exercise your dog enough (physically or mentally). If your dog is mostly walked on a leash and you don't have the opportunity to take him off the leash every day, it will be difficult for you to have a good leash walk with him. Your dog will first and foremost seek to satisfy his needs, therefore his needs for physical and mental exercise, so if he doesn't have the opportunity to really exercise, he will inevitably try to do so on a leash, by pulling here and there and also by picking up all the smells that are in his path. I therefore recommend that you take your dog out for at least thirty to forty-five minutes a day, either off the leash or on a leash. Mistake 2: You don't use the right equipment with your dog. The first thing you need to know is that if you are working with a harness to teach your dog to walk on a leash; I am talking about a harness with a clip on the back; know that this is equipment that was originally designed and manufactured to teach an animal, whatever it may be, to pull or haul heavy loads. That is why we also put it on dogs, especially for traction sports, canicross, cani mountain biking, so that the dog can use all the power of its body. So if I teach walking on a leash with a harness, it is not necessarily intuitive for the dog to learn not to pull since the equipment directly encourages pulling. So I really recommend that you use a classic flat collar. Second mistake on equipment for walking on a leash is that you must remove anything that is a retractable leash but also a lunge line. Why? Know that if you teach your dog to walk on a leash with a retractable leash or a lunge line, the problem is that your dog will not have a reference point on the distance he can go. Mistake 3: you put tension on your leash. Your dog, like you, is governed by a principle or reflex of opposition to tension. That is to say, the more you tighten your leash in one direction, the more your dog will tighten it in the other. So if when walking on a leash with your dog you hold your leash or you hold your dog back, he will oppose this tension and will necessarily tighten the leash so you will indirectly teach him to pull even more. Mistake 4: you tend to wait too long for your dog on a walk. Indeed, if when your dog goes right, you go right, when he goes left, you go left and when he accelerates, you accelerate, you indirectly teach him to lead the walk and therefore eventually to pull. On the contrary, what we want to teach your dog is to follow your movements and your legs. So I invite you to work on the opposition exercise while walking on a leash. That is to say, if he goes straight, go to the left instead, if he accelerates, slow down. The goal is to teach him gradually and gradually to follow your legs more and more, this will make him more attentive. Mistake 5: you lack consistency and rigor. Be careful, I am not talking about violence or being hard on your dog. I am simply talking about having a clear and unchanged framework whatever the context or situation. I will give you an example of what is inconsistency in my opinion. The inconsistency is you come home from work, you take your dog out and for two minutes you're going to let him pull since you've determined that it's ok, at that moment but after two minutes, you're tired of being walked or your arm hurts because your dog pulls too much and at that moment you take him back so that your dog stops pulling and at other times you're going to let him pull again. Finally, you have to be patient and perseverant. Like any learning, walking on a leash requires repetition. Even if you have a dog that has been pulling on a leash for a long time, know that he can learn not to pull. #dogtraining #dogtraining #canitime
