For hygiene in a beehive it is necessary to replace part of the frames in the brood chamber(s) annually with frames with fresh artificial comb that the bees still have to build. All residues that remain in the cells after each brood cycle are thus removed from the hive and no longer form a potential contamination. Beekeepers' association Amstelland offers its members the service of handing in dirty brood chamber frames that are steamed, scrubbed, rinsed and dried in the 'washing street' and can be picked up clean again. The melted wax is cleaned and reused as new artificial comb for the members. A small part is processed in-house for all kinds of educational purposes. The 'washing street' is operational 1 day a month and is run by volunteers in the beekeepers' association Amstelland.
