Gabon, officially known as the Gabonese Republic, is a small, sparsely populated country located on the west coast of Central Africa. Gabon has significant natural resources. Open to the Atlantic Ocean, it shares land borders with Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Congo. The country is sparsely populated, with a population of 2.3 million in 2021 and 88% of its territory occupied by forest. Without further ado, here are 20 interesting facts about Gabon. Gabon is a beautiful country, with lush green rainforests and hilly terrain. An almost endless green horizon. About 90% of Gabon is covered in dense forest, an area equivalent to that of the United Kingdom. That's more than 22 million hectares. A treasure that is protected, monitored closely every day. Part of the Congo Basin, this forest is teeming with biodiversity and is home to western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, and most of Africa’s critically endangered forest elephants. According to researchers, these trees help sequester nearly 100 million tons of carbon, making Gabon one of the few countries in the world that absorbs more CO2 than it emits. The highest point in the country is Mount Iboundji, which stands at an impressive 1,575 meters. This mountain is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Gabon’s rainforests are home to a wide variety of wildlife, making it a great place to explore and observe the natural world. Industrial production in Gabon is very clearly dominated by sawn timber (with more than 70% of production) but Gabon stands out from other countries in the Sub-Region by a relatively high production of plywood / veneers (Gabon is in the top 5 global exporters of tropical wood veneer). The number of wood processing units increased from 82 factories in 2009 to 162 factories in 2017/2018. Over the past nine years, wood production has doubled in Gabon. According to data from the French Treasury, it increased from 1.9 million m3 in 2012 to nearly 3.7 million in 2021. With this data, Gabon is positioned as the country with the highest wood production in the Cemac zone in 2021. I hope you enjoyed this video!
