Tejn Harbour through 100 years The film was made by Johnny Flatovs Produced for Tejn Local History Archive, which we have also added pictures and information to the film. Tejn's history began in 1569, but an actual harbour did not emerge until 1868. At that time Tejn was a farming community, and the few fishermen were poor. With a grant of 300 rigsdaler, a breakwater was built, and fishing slowly began to pick up. In 1888, the first harbour expansion took place, a basin to the west, and a few years later one of the fishermen in Tejn became the first on Bornholm to buy a motorised half-deck boat. At the time, this was a technological breakthrough that was quickly followed up by other fishermen, as the fishing possibilities with modern gear had greatly improved. In the years after World War I, one of the fishing adventures of the modern era began, the plaice fishery. The catches were considerable, and the youngest and strongest fishermen made sure to bring their catches ashore quickly and come to town to sell the fish. It was difficult for the older ones to keep up with it, for good reasons. The conflict could not be hidden, but gradually a solution emerged, as the fishermen agreed to form a sales association. In the 1930s, the plaice fishery began to fail, and the herring fishery slowly grew. The sales association expanded its ice and cold storage during the 1940s, and at the end of this decade a fillet cutting plant was built. At the eastern end of the harbour there is a glimpse of some of the older Tejn with a couple of old smokehouses. The natural background. The contour lines make clear the modest space for the harbour. Map 1:20,000. The harbour is surrounded by the town. Although the houses in the town are very different, they are uniform in proportions, and this gives the town front a harmonious expression. In 1962 the new west harbour was built, in 1982 the central harbour was added, and the industries at Tejn Harbour developed at the same pace as the fishing industry. A shipyard, a net tying plant and a shopping centre were built. At the beginning of the 1980s Tejn Harbour was at its peak. More than fifty large boats were based here.
