Teachings from the Book of Joshua, by Pastor José Manuel Sierra Vida Nueva Evangelical Center Thursday, November 21, 2024 The Book of Joshua is the sixth book of the Bible and narrates the conquest and distribution of the promised land, Canaan, under the leadership of Joshua, Moses’ successor. Below is a summary of the main sections: 1. Preparation for the conquest (Joshua 1-5) God calls Joshua as the leader of Israel after the death of Moses. Joshua receives the promise that he will be strong and courageous, and that God will be with him as He was with Moses. Spies are sent to Jericho and receive help from Rahab, who shows faith in the God of Israel. The people miraculously cross the Jordan River when God stops its waters, confirming His power and support for Joshua. 2. Conquest of the Land (Joshua 6-12): Jericho: The walls fall after following God’s instructions (marching silently and blowing trumpets). Ai: After an initial setback due to Achan’s sin, the people conquer the city. A coalition of Canaanite cities is defeated, including victory over five kings at Gibeon. The military campaign is divided into two: conquests in southern and northern Canaan. 3. Distribution of the Land (Joshua 13-22): The land is divided among the tribes of Israel according to God’s instructions. Joshua assigns cities of refuge to protect those accidentally killed, and cities to the Levites. The altar is reestablished on the eastern side of the Jordan, promoting unity among the tribes. 4. Joshua's Farewell and Exhortation (Joshua 23-24): In his final speeches, Joshua urges the people to remain faithful to the covenant with God and warns of the consequences of disobedience. The covenant is renewed at Shechem, where the people reaffirm their commitment to serve only the Lord. Joshua dies at the age of 110 and is buried in the promised land. God's Faithfulness: He fulfills His promise to give the land to Israel. Obedience: Victory depends on following divine instructions. Unity of the people: Cooperation between the tribes is essential. Holiness: God demands moral and spiritual purity. The book of Joshua shows that obedience and trust in God bring victory and blessing, while disobedience brings judgment.
