The percentage of higher education students enrolled in distance learning (EAD) has been growing every year in Rio Grande do Sul. In 2023, 58.3% (343,209) of university students in Rio Grande do Sul were enrolled in courses taught remotely. Annual data from the Higher Education Census, conducted by the Anísio Teixeira Institute of Educational Studies and Research (INEP), show that RS is the state where this percentage of students has grown the most in the last 10 years. From 2014 to 2023, there was an increase of 39.6 percentage points among university students in Rio Grande do Sul who study remotely. This Monday's Conversas Cruzadas (14), on Teachers' Day, hosted by Léo Saballa Jr., will feature live professor, director of Sinpro/RS and advisor to the State Education Council (CEEd), Sani Cardon, president of the State Student Union (UEE), Alejandro Guerrero, pedagogue from the UFRGS Distance Education Secretariat (Sead), Silvia Kist, and the director of undergraduate studies at Unisinos and representative of the Board of the Consortium of Community Universities of Rio Grande do Sul (Comung), Paula Campagnolo, to discuss whether distance education harms Higher Education.
