A physicist from the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM and a PhD in Physics from the University of Wales in Cardiff, United Kingdom, Dr. Miguel Alcubierre Moya worked for several years as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam, Germany. He is currently a senior researcher and Director of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences at UNAM, where his area of research is numerical relativity, that is, the computational simulation of astrophysical systems using Einstein's theory of general relativity. Within this area he has focused on the simulation of gravitational wave sources, specifically the collision of two black holes. He is the author of more than fifty publications, as well as a textbook published by Oxford University Press. He is a member of the highest level of the National System of Researchers and of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In 2009 he received the Medal of Merit in Science awarded by the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District, and in 2011 he received the “Mentes Quo-Discovery” award given by Quo magazine and the Discovery Channel.
