Textile factories were powered by water wheels from the end of the 18th century, after about 1820 they began to be powered by steam engines. Each factory had a boiler room with a boiler heated by black coal. The steam engine, using transmissions and belts, drove all the machines – washing machines, spinning machines and looms. The steam engine has a relatively low efficiency - this was increased by the fact that the steam from the cylinders, which, for example, is blown into the air by the chimney of a steam locomotive, was used here for heating water, for heating dryers for drying yarn and fabrics, and in the heating season for heating of factory halls and offices. In 1856, the line from Zastávka u Brno to Brno lower station was put into operation, which was used to import black coal from the Rosick-Oslava basin for the Brno industry. The siding to the former Mosilana textile factory leading through the park is the last well-preserved siding to the textile factory in Brno. Wagons carrying Rosick coal and bales of wool and back wagons loaded with piles of fabric drove along it until the end of the eighties of the 20th century. The Svitava channel, which brings water from the Svitava river to the Ponávka river, existed already in the Middle Ages - the Radlín watermill stood on it, from whose name arose the name of the locality and today's street, as well as the former freight yard and station of the Radlas railway operator. Later, its water powered the first spinning mills and weaving mills and was used for production - according to a memory from the late 1930s, the water flowed in it and in Ponávka a different color every day - depending on which factories dyed yarn and fabrics that day. The water from it was also used to supply steam boilers, because as surface water it was soft and did not clog the boilers with boiler scale. As late as the 1930s, electricity was used only for lighting in textile factories. After 1990, the glory of the Brno textile industry ended - except for the Nová Mosilana factory in Černovice and a small production in Zábrdovice. As part of the Transport Nostalgia Days 2021, the company KORDIS JMK, as prepared a demonstration of one of the last functional steam engines in Brno in the Rusalka locomotive.
