Widow at 21. It happened to Marieke Mulder. Marieke was 18 when she met Wesley at the neighborhood party. They quickly had a special connection. But Wesley also realized very well what his situation was. At that time, he had been told six months ago that he had colon cancer. Despite the fact that he found it exciting to start a relationship at such a time, they both wanted to try. In addition, all treatments and operations had been successful. Things looked good for Wesley. A few months later, Wesley was declared clean. They did know that there was a big chance that the cancer would return at some point. But that would hopefully only be a worry far in the future. After six months, Wesley had to go back for his first check-up. Unfortunately, things went wrong there right away. The cancer had returned. A big blow and news that you actually did not expect. It was a very beautiful and intense relationship. You are dealing with subjects that you should not be dealing with at all at such an age. Chemo radiation, Wesley's health. That was all paramount. It was a long road with many treatments. In September 2005 they received the bad news that they could no longer do anything for Wesley. He was allowed to live for another 3 months. During that period they entered into a registered partnership because Wesley wanted to leave Marieke in good condition. Today I will talk to Marieke about what that is like at that age, how does your environment deal with it? And how do you continue with your own life?
