Takaoka copperware began with the seven casters (who inherited the techniques of Tannan County, Kawachi Province) invited by Lord Maeda Toshinaga, the lord of Kaga Domain, after he surrendered Takaoka Castle in 1609. Initially, iron casting was the focus, but copper casting became popular from the mid-Edo period, and in the Meiji period, the techniques improved further, and copperware was introduced to the world at the World Exposition, establishing a firm position as an export item. In 1975, the area was designated as a production area for traditional crafts by the government.
