The Alawites make up about 10 percent of Syria’s population. Latakia, a coastal city 50 km south of the Turkey-Syria border, is the city with the largest Alawite population. The overthrow of Assad’s government by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its takeover of Damascus and other cities in Syria has brought fear and uncertainty to Latakia. The new Syrian flag, with its three red stars, hangs in shops and on some balconies in the city. The BBC team was with the HTS, which has become a law enforcement force in Latakia, as they followed up on tip-offs in the city. The BBC’s Quentin Sommerville reports from Latakia.
