After half a century of the Assad family ruling Syria with an iron fist, a lightning offensive by rebel forces changed the country's reality. In 12 days, the powerful Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al Shams (HTS) and its allied factions precipitated the fall of President Bashar al-Assad after 13 years of civil war. The country is a kind of chessboard of interests of regional powers, such as Israel and Iran, and global ones, such as the US and Russia.
