He persecuted the opposition, cracked down on enemies, and tortured people in prisons, but despite this, he was always a welcome guest in Moscow. And he boasted that after each trip he would bring back no less than a billion from there. Hawez Assad brought money and military aid from the Union, and the Soviet embassy sent zinc coffins with dead Russians who became victims of Moscow's aggressive policy every week. But military contingents, support for the dictator, blood and games of Soviet special services are the shadow side of cooperation between the Kremlin and Damascus. To the general public, communist propaganda enthusiastically talked about something else - friendship of peoples and joint conquest of space. Today, in the days when the long-standing regime of dictator Bashar Assad fell in Syria, and Russian troops fled so "majesticly" before the onslaught of the rebels that they did not even have time to take out their "analog" equipment, we tell about the history of relations between Moscow and Damascus.
