SYRIA: Only a partial withdrawal from Russia? What is behind it? These could be Putin's plans Russian soldiers and military vehicles were seen withdrawing from areas in southern Syria on Friday. They were moving towards their main base in the coastal city of Latakia. Large Russian military convoys were seen on the highway between Damascus and Homs near the village of Shinshar heading north. Among the military vehicles, which bore Russian flags, were tanks and armored personnel carriers. The military equipment had previously been stationed in southern regions such as Daraa and Damascus. On Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Russian forces were leaving bases in Ain Issa and Al-Samn in rural areas in Al-Raqqa province. Satellite images from the company Maxar Technologies on Friday showed what appeared to be cargo planes at a Russian military airfield in Syria, their noses open to accommodate heavy armaments. Helicopters were also seen being dismantled and prepared for transport.
